Deliverability for Dummiez

The Inbox Newsletter

Hey it’s Max from The Inbox Newsletter.

Some people have fear of heights, other people have fears of the spam folder (me included).

One of my major lessons in email marketing is how easy deliverability really is.

Let me explain…

From Terrified to Empowered… My Deliverability Journey

That sounded like the name of a shitty MTV documentary or somethign but I thought it was funny.

Anyways, one thing that I was always terrified about when starting out was deliverability.

How often am I landing in spam? Why are my open rates so low? Is my sending domain fried? Am I missing a record on my DNS settings?

But I’ve started to realize that deliverability is so easy… once I started to think like an inbox provider.

Think In The Eyes of An Inbox Provider

If you send emails that have 20% open rates, that means 8/10 people do NOT want to receive or read your emails.

If you were Google and wanted to give a good customer experience for people who use your Gmail app, you would send the email address sending those 20% emails to spam too, right?

The point of what I’m saying?

If you control your open rates and engagement, Google will send you to the main inbox.

Sounds difficult, but it’s really not.

How do you do this?

So simple.

Get this.

Only send to people who actually open your emails!!

A lot of the brands I look at send emails to everybody in their email list… but many of the profiles they are sending to will never open because maybe it’s a fake email, they have strict requirements so you’re just landing in spam, or they just don’t care about your brand anymore.

By continuing to send to them you just ruin your reputation.

All you have to do is only send to engaged lists, typically I recommend only sending to people who have opened or clicked in email in the past 60-90 days.

Then for big events, like sales, you can open your emails to the whole list.

The Unspoken Side of Deliverability

Everybody talks about the technical side of deliverability but no one ever talks about just improving the quality of your content so people keep coming back.

Just send GOOD emails that people actually want to open.

If you send sale after sale after sale, the customer will get bored of your stuff and become numb to your messaging.

If they know they’re getting the same thing in every email with a lame looking design, they will see your email notification and won’t open.

HOWEVER…

Give tips, value, and education and combine that with a good brand voice and nice looking design and people will keep opening your emails.

Send good emails, and only send them to people who want to receive them.

It’s that simple!

Deliverability for Dummies Summarized

  1. Only send campaign emails to people who actually open your emails, this way you get high open rates and tell Google people want to receive your emails.

  2. Send better content. Give value and mix that with fun copy and design and people will keep coming back.

Notes:
THIS is what it looks like to give value to your customer…

No selling in this email, just overcoming a pain point for a customer and giving resources (bonus because the customer has to click).

When I say give value and get customers coming back, this is what I mean.
